Wedding on the Zugspitze

Getting married on the Zugspitze is more than a wedding day. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Let’s tell your story together.
A wedding on the Zugspitze is more than a ceremony. It’s a full experience and, above all, a decision to get married in the mountains.
This wedding day with Iva and Max will stay with me forever, because it was filled with emotion, closeness, and so many special moments.
From the first meeting to the wedding day
I met the two of them in a relaxed first video call. Even in that conversation, I was immediately excited about their wedding plans. Their dream of a small but beautiful mountain wedding, and the way they spoke about their relationship, truly moved me. We had more calls after that, refining the flow of their wedding on the Zugspitze step by step and tailoring it perfectly to them. Iva had so many creative ideas, and together we worked them smoothly into the day. As their May wedding got closer, my excitement grew with every conversation.
Wedding photos at Lake Eibsee: the start of the day
We met in the parking lot at Lake Eibsee, a place that’s simply one of a kind for wedding photos. Right by the shoreline, we started with the first wedding photos at Lake Eibsee. The backdrop of the emerald-green water, the Zugspitze behind them, and a few curious ducks was unforgettable. Even during this first couple shoot, it got very emotional. Iva and Max used that exclusive time just for themselves, reading personal words to each other. The first tears flowed. Moments like that are what make wedding photos feel alive and real, and they hold on to emotion forever.

Up to the top by cogwheel train: arriving on the Zugspitze
After that deeply personal time together, we met up with the rest of the wedding group. Then we all took the cogwheel train up to the Zugspitze. That ride alone is always something special: full of excitement, laughter, and the feeling that you’re about to experience something truly once in a lifetime. Getting married on the Zugspitze means leaving everyday life far below and focusing fully on this moment.
Civil ceremony on the Zugspitze
This civil ceremony on the Zugspitze was, like every one I’ve had the honor of photographing up there, absolutely unique. High above, surrounded by snow and mountains, there’s always a kind of atmosphere you can’t recreate anywhere else.
In addition to the loved ones there in person, Iva’s parents in the US even joined by video. Despite the time difference, they were able to watch the ceremony live in the middle of the night, and afterwards they even raised a toast together. A moment that showed how connecting love can be, no matter the distance.

Couple shoot in the snow
After the ceremony, we did a second part of the couple shoot. Even though it was May, the Zugspitze surprised us with snowfall and, unfortunately, no sweeping views. But that’s also what makes a Zugspitze wedding so special. The quiet, the snow, and the closeness between the two of them created an incredibly romantic atmosphere. These wedding photos tell the story of a mountain wedding that didn’t need to be perfect to feel perfect.
Celebrating in a small circle and heading back down
Afterwards, Iva and Max continued celebrating with their loved ones in a small, very personal setting. For me, it was time to head back down into the valley after this intense and beautiful Zugspitze experience, with so much gratitude in my heart. This wedding reminded me once again how special getting married in the mountains can be, a mountain wedding with the Garmisch registry office, and especially a wedding on the Zugspitze.
Getting married on the Zugspitze: how to safe your spot
Do you know how you can actually get married on the Zugspitze? It’s something truly special, and anything but guaranteed. Only once a month, there’s a chance for civil ceremonies up on the Zugspitze. You can apply exactly six months in advance. Then it’s time to hope and keep your fingers crossed. With a bit of luck and an email sent right on time, you’ll receive the confirmation from the Garmisch registry office. Then you have six months to look forward to it, and honestly, if I’d known this before my own civil wedding years ago, I would have wanted to get married up there, too.

Why these mountain weddings are true heart-highlights for me
Even now, every mountain wedding on the Zugspitze is a true heart-highlight for me as a wedding photographer. The experience, the scenery, the эмоtions, the rarity, it’s all so unique and so intense that it’s hard to put into words. You really have to live it. It’s a wedding experience you don’t just see, you feel it deeply.
