In the Alps above Innsbruck

At the end of February, a wedding brought me to Innsbruck. Way up high, where the city lies beneath you and the mountains fill your entire view. Even the journey felt special. We left Weilheim early in the morning, with that quiet flutter I always feel when a wedding day is coming, especially one that’s a little different.

Once in Innsbruck, the atmosphere was unmistakable. Crisp winter air, sun over the rooftops, and that sense of wide open space that makes Tyrol so unique. The day began in a relaxed way with Melanie and Andre getting ready, two people who had intentionally chosen a wedding far from the usual conventions.

Getting ready in Innsbruck, calm, minimal, full of anticipation

Getting ready took place right in the middle of Innsbruck. Outside, life moved along as usual. Inside, it felt quiet and almost intimate. Judith from Brautraum helped Melanie into her wedding dress, a dress that fit the winter backdrop perfectly: clean, modern, and still soft in its feel.

Andre got ready in parallel, wearing a suit by Luis Trenker. Timeless, elegant, with a touch of alpine character, exactly right for a mountain wedding. Hair and makeup were done by Wearhouse, subtle, natural, and perfectly matched to the crisp light outside.

Even in these early moments, you could feel how excited they were for the day. No stress, no rush, just that quiet smile you carry when you know something special is about to happen.

Up into the mountains on the Nordkette cable car

Around midday, we headed to the Nordkette cable car. The ride up is an experience every time. Innsbruck dropped away beneath us as the mountains moved closer and closer. Within minutes, the setting shifted from urban to alpine. That contrast is exactly what makes weddings in Innsbruck so unique.

Once at the top, the mountains reminded us how fast the weather can change. Barely had we reached the summit when a snowstorm rolled in. Within minutes, sunny winter weather turned into a wild scene of wind, snow, and cold.

A wedding you can’t hold back

That’s exactly what mountain weddings are about. They aren’t predictable. They aren’t controllable. And that’s where the magic lives. Even though it felt like minus ten degrees, Melanie and Andre weren’t going to miss this moment. Wrapped up in their wedding looks, they stood right in the snowfall, held on to each other, and laughed straight into the storm.

These images don’t happen in warmth and comfort. They happen outside, when you dare to trust the moment. For me as a wedding photographer, moments like this are priceless, honest, raw, and full of feeling.

The rings from Schmuckwerkstatt Natters still sparkled through the snowflakes, and the bouquet by Blumen Charisma added a soft contrast to the rugged surroundings. All of those details fit naturally into this winter wedding.

Finding warmth, and enjoying the moment

When the wind became too strong, we retreated into a beautifully designed igloo. Inside, everything finally got quieter. Warmth, soft laughter, a chance to breathe. These pauses are what make a wedding day feel complete, they give you space to let it all sink in.

That’s also where a wedding cake from Die Tortennascherei was waiting, and it wasn’t just a perfect visual match for this alpine winter wedding. It was a small moment of comfort in the middle of the storm, and the perfect finishing touch.

This wedding was a reminder of how special Innsbruck is as a wedding destination. The closeness of city and mountains, the Nordkette cable car as a link between two worlds, and that unmistakable alpine mood create memories that last.
